Bush Theatre - Stovepipe
Stovepipe was a collaboration between Bush Theatre, The National Theatre and West12. Set in the basement beneath Morrisons supermarket, it was a striking dramatisation of former journalist Adam Brace's experiences of Amman. The basement was transformed to depict various compelling scenes which the audience moved through as the cleverly constructed plot unfolded.
This innovative use of basement space, and creation of a win-win relationship was due to the foresight of West12’s centre manager. Jason King, who has a strong literary background, identified the basement as an ideal location for the show after discussions with Josie Rourke, artistic director of the Bush Theatre. The use of dead space to support the arts ticked all the right boxes for West 12, both from a void strategy perspective and in predicating the centre’s strong community ethos.
Ongoing Support
The office block on Rockley Road and one of the centre's empty units, are currently being used by Bush Theatre as rehearsal space. These spaces have been offered to the theatre to support and promote local culture.
